Good afternoon,

I hope that you and your family are well and that your child has enjoyed a positive start to this week - their final week of term before we break for the Easter holiday.

NON-UNIFORM DAY – UKRAINE FUNDRAISER

Ms Hornby has been working hard with our student leaders and form reps to organise fundraising events to support the Red Cross’ campaign to raise money to support victims of the war in Ukraine. On Friday our students are invited to attend school in non-school uniform, wearing blue and yellow if possible and making a voluntary donation of £1. In addition, students may want to bring a small amount of money to school to buy items from a bake sale organised by our form reps, proceeds of which will go to the Red Cross. Finally, all students are invited to take part in an art competition to draw or paint a sunflower – details of how to enter and the deadline for entries has been shared with students at form time.

We hope that these events will help to raise money but also awareness of the huge challenges facing people in Ukraine.

YEAR 8 PARENTS’ EVENING

Our teachers are looking forward to meeting parents/carers of Year 8 students at Thursday’s Year 8 parents’ evening. Details of the online event have already been shared, and we have already had lots of bookings.

FOOTBALLING SUCCESS

Congratulations to our Year 8 girls football team who competed and were victorious in Friday’s SUFC Community Tournament. The team should be very proud of their victory. Well done, girls!

And well done to our Year 10 boys who defeated Fir Vale 4 – 0 in a home fixture last week.

UK MATHS CHALLENGE

A few weeks ago, a number of our students took part in the annual UK maths challenge, along with 700,000 other young people nationwide. As ever our students worked really hard, and this year four of our students have progressed to the next round, meaning they were placed in the top 8,000 nationally. A special mention to Josh from Year 9 who will receive a special certificate for finishing in the top 2,000. Well done, Josh – a fine achievement.

YEAR 11 EASTER SCHOOL

We have now finalised our plans for Easter School. Students in Year 11 will receive a personalised letter in form time tomorrow detailing the sessions to which they have been invited. Please could parents/carers of Year 11 students complete the consent form that will accompany the letter to support us in knowing how many students to plan for.

YEAR 7 NATIONAL POETRY DAY

Thank you to our Year 7 students for their engagement in poetry last workshops last week with visiting poet ‘That Poetry Bloke’. And thanks in particular to those parents/carers who joined their children in the school library at the end of the day to enjoy an additional session.

With many thanks for your continued excellent support,

Joe Birkbeck
